The Trance You Didn't Know You Were In: A Downtown Vancouver Hypnotherapy Story

Cozy counselling office in downtown Vancouver with a grey tufted sofa, warm floor lamp, potted plants, and a neutral patterned rug — a calming space for hypnotherapy and psychotherapy sessions.
Welcome to my counselling space—a place for healing, growth, and coming home to yourself.

Written by Nikta Niazi, RCC, Certified Hypnotherapist

A client I'll call Sarah sat across from me in my downtown Vancouver office, her hands wrapped around a paper cup of tea she wasn't drinking. She had searched "hypnotherapy Vancouver" at two in the morning, half out of curiosity, half out of desperation. Three weeks of insomnia will do that to a person.

"I don't know if I believe in hypnosis," she told me, moments after sitting down. "Isn't that the thing where you swing a pocket watch, and I cluck like a chicken?"

I smiled; I'd heard this before. "That's stage hypnosis," I said. "What I do here is clinical hypnotherapy, and it's part of a broader psychotherapy practice. The truth is, you're already in and out of hypnotic states dozens of times a day. You just don't call it that."

We Are All a Little Hypnotized, Every Day

I explained it simply. Have you ever driven home and arrived with no memory of the actual drive? Have you ever been so absorbed in a book, a movie, or a daydream that someone had to say your name twice before you noticed them? That's a trance. It's a natural, ordinary shift in attention — the mind narrowing its focus while the rest of the world fades to background noise.

We are all hypnotized every day. "Have you ever driven home and arrived with no memory of the actual drive?"

"Hypnosis isn't something strange I impose on you," I told her. "It's something your brain already knows how to do. In hypnotherapy, I simply guide that same natural state on purpose, with intention, toward healing."

Sarah leaned forward. This felt less like a magic trick and more like... a tool.

Why Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy Work Better Together

In my downtown Vancouver practice, I combine hypnotherapy with traditional talk therapy, cognitive behavioural approaches, somatic work, and psychodynamic exploration. The reasoning is simple: the conscious mind is where we make decisions and set intentions, but the subconscious mind is where habits, fears, and old patterns actually live.

For many clients, language matters just as much as credentials. Working with a therapist in your first language can make it easier to access the emotions and memories that hypnotherapy gently invites to the surface. In my downtown Vancouver practice, I offer hypnotherapy and psychotherapy sessions in both English and Farsi, so Persian-speaking clients can do this deep work in the language that feels most like home

"Talk therapy alone can help you understand why you feel anxious," I told her. "Hypnotherapy helps your nervous system actually feel different. Together, insight and change reinforce each other."

For Sarah, who had been in traditional psychotherapy for anxiety for over a year, this was the missing piece. She understood her triggers intellectually. She couldn't seem to stop her body from reacting to them.

Like a dandelion scattered by the wind, a dysregulated nervous system can feel fragmented and untethered. Healing is the gentle process of finding safety, one small moment at a time.

The Session: What Hypnotherapy Actually Feels Like

I dimmed the lights slightly and asked Sarah to get comfortable in the chair. No swinging watch. No commands to bark like a seal.

"I'm going to guide your attention," I said, "the same way it narrows when you're absorbed in something you love. You'll hear everything. You'll remember everything. You're in control the entire time."

I began speaking slowly, inviting Sarah to notice her breath, the weight of her body in the chair, the small sounds of the room. Within a few minutes, Sarah felt strangely light — not asleep, not unconscious, but focused, the way she felt on the rare mornings she woke up before her alarm and just lay there, half-dreaming.

I used this relaxed, focused state to gently introduce new, calming associations to replace Sarah's anxious ones — a technique common in hypnotherapy for anxiety, stress, insomnia, and even chronic pain management.

Twenty minutes later, Sarah opened her eyes, blinking at the rain in downtown Vancouver through the window, feeling like she'd taken a long, restorative nap.

Not asleep. Not "under." Just... quiet, for the first time in weeks. She told me she felt like she'd exhaled for the first time in a month.

What Hypnotherapy Can Help With

Therapists across Vancouver use hypnotherapy alongside psychotherapy for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Anxiety and chronic stress

  • Insomnia and sleep difficulties

  • Phobias

  • Smoking cessation and habit change

  • Chronic pain management

  • Processing trauma, when paired with trauma-informed psychotherapy

  • Building confidence and self-esteem

It isn't a replacement for psychotherapy — it's a complement to it, a way of reaching the parts of the mind that logic alone can't always touch.

Finding the Right Hypnotherapist in Vancouver

Not every hypnotherapist is a licensed psychotherapist, and not every psychotherapist offers hypnotherapy. I always tell clients that the safest, most effective path is to look for a registered clinical counsellor or psychologist in Vancouver who has specific training in clinical hypnotherapy — someone who can blend evidence-based psychotherapy with the focused, guided relaxation of hypnosis.

Late-night searching for the right words — and the right therapist. So many people start this journey the same way: alone, at a desk, typing "hypnotherapy Vancouver" or "Farsi speaking therapist" into a search bar at 1 am.

When searching, it helps to ask:

  1. Is the practitioner a registered psychotherapist, counsellor, or psychologist in British Columbia?

  2. Do they have accredited training in clinical hypnotherapy?

  3. Do they combine hypnotherapy with talk therapy, rather than offering hypnosis alone?

Sarah, Three Months Later

Sarah still can't tell you exactly what happened in that chair by the window in my office. But she can tell you that she sleeps now. That the tight, anxious hum in her chest has quieted. That she stopped fighting her own mind and started working with it.

"I thought hypnosis was about losing control," she said at her final session. "It turns out it was about finally being in control of a part of my mind I didn't know I could reach."

Full bloom, in its own time. Healing rarely looks dramatic from the outside — it looks like this: something quietly opening, petal by petal, once it finally feels safe enough

If you've been searching for hypnotherapy in downtown Vancouver or wondering whether psychotherapy alone is giving you the full picture, know this: your mind is already capable of trance, focus, and deep change. Sometimes all it takes is the right guide to help you use it on purpose.
